About

Among the multitude of alpine lake treks in Kashmir, the Tulian Lake Trek shines as the most captivating, situated in the mesmerizing surroundings of Pahalgam. Tulian Lake, hailed as Pahalgam’s most exotic alpine lake, offers tranquility and charm to all its visitors. Located approximately 15 km from Pahalgam, the trek ascends to a highest point of 3700 meters above sea level, providing stunning panoramic views. Surrounded by majestic mountains on three sides, the lake is a sight to behold. In winter, it is cloaked in a blanket of snow, while summer unveils its vibrant and clear waters. With the imposing Zanskar Range on one side and the grand Pir Panjal Range on the other, the lake is a serene retreat amidst these natural colossuses. Setting out on the Tulian Lake Trek, positioned at an elevation of 3684 meters in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, offers a journey through the splendid natural beauty of Pahalgam. Between the mighty Pir Panjal and Zanskar mountains, Tulian Lake stands as a testament to the region’s untouched and serene landscape.

Highlights of Tulian Lake Trek

The trek to Tulian Lake, perched at an elevation of around 3,684 meters, involves navigating through varying terrains, ascending and descending scenic landscapes. This path is a favorite among those seeking adventure in the breathtaking alpine settings, offering unparalleled views of majestic mountain ranges, verdant meadows, and dense forests. There are several compelling reasons to embark on the Tulian Lake Trek.

Unmatched Scenery: Primarily, the trek offers a gateway to the stunning vistas of Kashmir, allowing one to immerse in the unique culture and lifestyle of the region.

Insight into Nomadic Life: Along the route, travelers encounter secluded villages, providing a rare glimpse into the lives of the locals and an understanding of their day-to-day existence. The Tulian Lake Trek stands as an oasis of calm, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Nature’s Solitude: It presents the perfect opportunity to savor the quiet and serenity that nature affords, set against some of the most exquisite alpine backdrops in the area. In essence, the Tulian Lake Trek is an ideal choice for those looking to challenge themselves physically and mentally, while exploring the unparalleled natural beauty of Kashmir.

Best Time to do the Tulian Lake Trek

Trekking to Tulian Lake during May and the first half of June presents an environment reminiscent of winter landscapes. The lake is ensconced in ice, and the surrounding valley is blanketed in a considerable layer of snow. As June wanes, the snow starts to retreat, revealing the lake’s signature turquoise glow.

During the monsoon period of July and August, while the rest of the Indian subcontinent experiences heavy rainfall, the climate in the Kashmir Valley tells a different story. Kashmir sees only a light sprinkle during these months, unlike the intense monsoons of Uttarakhand or Himachal Pradesh. This anomaly is credited to the Pir Panjal range, which acts as a barrier preventing most rain clouds from penetrating the valley, thus facilitating easier trekking conditions. In this period, the lake dazzles in its deepest blue, surrounded by verdant meadows and valleys, with the climate remaining agreeably mild for trekking.

As the calendar flips to September and October, the meadows around Tulian Lake begin to adopt a golden hue, signaling the onset of cooler temperatures. This transitional phase marks a significant change in the landscape’s color palette and atmosphere.

The Difficulty Level of Tulian LakeTrek

Ascending to an elevation of 12,087 feet, the Tulian Valley trek is categorized as moderate to challenging. This classification stems primarily from the trek’s duration and its consistent upward trajectory. It earns a moderate label due to the presence of a few demanding ascents and lengthier days of hiking, such as the climb to Tulian Lake.

When compared to treks that are considered easy-moderate, like Kedarkantha and Dayara Bugyal, Tulian Valley presents a bit more of a challenge, attributed to these factors.

Embarking on this journey begins with reaching Pahalgam. From Srinagar, securing a direct/shared cab is straightforward. It’s advisable to spend the initial night in Pahalgam to adjust to the altitude. The trek itself kicks off the following day with a brief drive to Tulian Lake’s base.

The path primarily involves an ascent through Tulian valley, where you’ll camp overnight. The subsequent day is dedicated to exploring Tulian Lake, following a 2km climb to witness its splendor. After visiting the lake, you’ll return and camp again in Tulian Valley.

The concluding day of the trek involves descending back to Pahalgam from Tulian Valley. Tulian Lake itself is situated at an elevation of 3,700 meters.

How to Reach

To start the Tulian Lake trek, your journey begins by heading to Pahalgam, situated 85 kilometers to the south of Srinagar. The quaint village of Ganesh Bal, just 2 kilometers from Pahalgam, acts as the launching point for this adventure. For ease of understanding, here’s a breakdown of the journey depending on your mode of transport and chosen path: From Srinagar Airport to TRC: Upon leaving Srinagar’s Sheikh Ul-Alam airport, the sight of the Indian tricolor flag greets you. Your initial destination is the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), 12 kilometers away from the airport, located in the heart of Srinagar. It’s a prominent site next to a football field, making it easy to spot. There are two main ways to reach TRC:
  • The most recommended way is by government bus. Airport shuttles head to TRC every 30 minutes, costing about 80 rupees. This is the most economical and reliable option if you’re not pressed for time.
  • Alternatively, cabs are readily available outside the airport. This option is faster but more expensive, with the fare around Rs. 600.
TRC to Pahalgam: The journey continues towards Pahalgam, which is your key landmark. There are two routes; one goes through Anantnag on the four-lane Jammu Highway, and the other, offering views of apple and apricot orchards, passes through Bijbehra, merging with the first route about three kilometers before reaching Pahalgam. The travel time for this leg is approximately 3.5 hours. From Jammu by Bus: If coming from Jammu, you’ll find shared taxis outside the Jammu ISBT’s two gates. Fares to Srinagar range from Rs 700 to Rs 1000. A cheaper option is to take a bus from the railway station to the bus terminal (“Bus Adda”), costing Rs 10, then a taxi to the ISBT for Rs 80 to 120. Kashmir Taxi Service offers bookings to any location within Kashmir for further convenience. The best period to undertake the Tulian Valley trek spans from May through October, encompassing three distinct seasons, each casting a unique charm on the trek.
