Johansen & Co. Ltd., originally established in Since 1943 and managed by British owners in Srinagar, Kashmir, functioned as a prominent export and tourist agency during the pre-independence period. The company handled a wide range of travel-related services, including arranging houseboats, trekking expeditions, and other facilities for visiting clients. Mr. Ali Mohammad Gosani was employed in the firm’s Tourist Agency Department, where he carried out key operational responsibilities. His service was formally recognized as courteous, honest, and reliable, with particular trust placed in his handling of financial matters and client arrangements.

Following India’s independence and the gradual withdrawal of British enterprises from the region, the company’s tourist operations underwent a transition. After continuing in service for several years, Mr. Gosani formally acquired the Tourist Department of Johansen & Co. Private Ltd. on 29th March 1972. Mr. Gosani was granted legal permission to continue operating under the established name “Johansen & Co.,” thereby preserving the company’s longstanding identity and reputation in the tourism sector. This continuity allowed the business to retain its historical credibility while transitioning into an indigenous enterprise.

Even after the original British owners exited the region, the company retained its international linkages. Under the leadership of Mr. Ali Mohammad Gosani, Johansen & Co. continued to collaborate with British and European partners, facilitating the arrival of tourists from the United Kingdom and across Europe. This association remained active for several decades, extending into the 1990s, during which the company consistently organized travel arrangements and hosted foreign visitors, thereby preserving its long-standing international clientele and reputation.

Since that time, the company has remained under the stewardship of the Gosani family, passing through generations. Today, it is managed by the third generation, maintaining its status as one of the oldest registered travel agencies in Jammu and Kashmir, with an unbroken lineage that traces back to the colonial era.
